I am not sure where to start today. I suppose, this being a diary, recording a bit of yesterday would be good. Well, yesterday was pancake day. For the Christian world it was Shrove Tuesday but for us in the UK (Christian or otherwise), we eat pancakes. We also run about the streets with them, racing each other with pans held out in front of our bodies. In some cases, the pancakes aren’t used much but we play a violent form of street football or roll down hills. It is, essentially, a day of madness before ‘we’ settle into depriving ourselves of any pleasure for 40 days….ish. Well, that is except for March 17th, when we all get a day off for St Paddy’s celebrations, even if we aren’t Irish (although I am, so I have double permission to be food naughty). Apparently they also don’t do Lent deprivation on Sundays but really go for it today (Ash Wednesday) and Good Friday. For clarity, ‘They’ are the Christians (the religion not the pop group).
I suppose it is a good time to fast and stuff because all of the food has run out, you know the stuff we prepared last Autumn and have chomped on through the winter. Greggs (a sandwich chain in the UK) has announced today, a large drop in business over winter so clearly we have been making use of our salted beef and pickled vegetables rather than feasting on their sausage rolls. One also has to wonder that, as all the major religions seem to have some form of fasting as part of their ‘thing’, that fasting might be good for us?
Yesterday also included a swim (no pool rage to report), quite a lot of thinking and talking. Nothing groundbreaking for me then?
Today, well today started with me taking my private blood test – yes, I actually remembered to do it before I ate anything (see above for possible reasons). I now have some chores to do which will mean a trip to a variety of post boxes – there is the blood test to be sent away and I have sold some flip flops on Vinted. Today Flip Flops tomorrow, I will sell the world. No, stop it Kay. You have been listening to the Trumpinator too much.
Talking of which, I woke up in the night to him going on and on and on. I had left the radio playing as I had drifted off to snoozeland. The station I was tuned to streamed his entire speech to Congress or the Senate or both. Now he has Zalensky calling him a ‘strong leader’ (yes the beleaguered Ukrainian President is eating his humble pie, as requested), The Donald has shifted his sights to poor old Greenland. Apparently he just HAS to have it because it is vital for the safety of the Free World. It’s absolutely nothing to do with the potential mineral deposits, oil etc…Nooooooo. Oh and, Mr Trump, where is this ‘Free World’? And, where does one go to buy a country? I suppose in the US it would be Bloomingdales?
In other news….Elon Musk wore a suit. Yup, you heard it here first. Perhaps he is heading to where I am heading to…..
Where is that Kay? Well, I am off to The Buxton Opera House. No, not to watch/listen to Opera. I am going to see Kate Mosse do a live show about her famous debut novel, Labyrinth, which is now twenty years old. I am not sure what to expect from the performance, but I think a trip to Scriveners (a wonderful second hand bookshop) before the theatre has to be on the cards. It will make the trip all worthwhile, whatever happens in the Labyrinth!
